Ugly Boy Flutes: introduction

Welcome to my world of... well, certainly not "same-ness." I view life as an unending Journey of creativity, of discovery, of Remembrance... my art and music follow suit, as well they should.

When I was a kid, my dad called me "OOAK" (OOOH-ock), which is an acronym for "One-Of-A-Kind." Being the third of three kids, I just came out of the gate doing things differently from everyone else… when they turned right, I wanted to turn left. You get the idea. It was a no-brainer to develop a website for my creations at OoakArt.com.

Before the Flute found me, I created many pieces of art that were "one-off," as they say in the car world... solitary works of which I made only one and will never repeat. While I do have some of that art still around, this website now focuses on my true Soul's work - making Native American style flutes. And as you can see by the photos, even my flutes are one-of-a-kind in almost every respect. Too, I have released an exciting DVD project simply called "Video Postcards" where I put my flutes and music to my nature photography.

My Journey with the Native American flute began on September 10, 2001... just one day before 9/11 did I hold my first flute and make sounds. For me, I knew the flute was to be an instrument of Medicine, not only for my healing then during a tough time, but in giving that gift to others. The Native American flute is an instrument indigenous to this continent, a highly spiritual instrument developed by the First Nations peoples. Though some may play it just for the musical value, it still carries with it the voices of Relations Past, and provides peaceful, healing Medicine for me.

My philosophy is that each flute I release is of the highest quality voice I can produce. The sound quality is by far my number one focus, with aesthetics taking a distant back seat. All of my flutes are of Iroquois/Eastern Woodlands style and have virtually no hiss to the voices. You will notice the great variation in woods, block designs, and carvings/paintings, which is simply how I create flutes... one-of-a-kind that sing to the stars.

I don't make very many flutes at this time, but the ones I make are very special and hard to let go of most of the time! In the following pages you can find out more about Ugly Boy Flutes and how they come into existence...
